Giovanni Francini (born August 3, 1963 in Massa ) is a former Italian football player who was active during his playing career for Torino Calcio , AC Reggiana , SSC Napoli , CFC Genoa and Brescia Calcio . He also played eight games for the Italian national soccer team .
Career

Giovanni Francini began his career in the youth team of Torino Calcio , for whose professional team he made his first five Serie A games in the 1980/81 season . The defender was used in the following season more often could not even play in the starting eleven and was for the 1982/83 season for AC Reggiana in the second division, the Series B awarded. There the defender became an integral part of the defensive and returned to Turin a year later. The defender made it into the regular squad after his return and placed himself in a secured midfield position with Torino. In the summer of 1987 he was signed by the SSC Napoli . In his first season with Naples, he finished second in Serie A and was only three points less than AC Milan .
In the 1988/89 season, Francini won his first trophy with the southern Italian club with the UEFA Cup . In the finals, VfB Stuttgart was defeated in the first and second leg with a total of 5: 4 goals. A year later, Francini earned a total of 51 points in Serie A with Napoli and won the Italian championship. In the same year, the Italian Supercoppa was also won. The defender could not build on this success with the team in the following years and instead placed himself in the safe midfield. In 1994 he left Naples and joined league rivals CFC Genoa .
The defender played only a few competitive games and changed clubs again a few months later. He agreed on a collaboration with Brescia Calcio . With only 12 points, he rose with Brescia as the bottom of the table in Serie B and in the following season would have been passed through as 16th in the second highest division almost to Serie C1 , when the team was only one point over relegated Fidelis Andria and the Relegation ensured. Then Francini ended his active career at the age of 32.
National team
Francini was appointed to the squad of the Italian U-21 squad for the first time in 1984 by then coach Azeglio Vicini , for which he made his debut on October 31, 1984 in the game against Switzerland. On his sixth appearance for the U-21s on December 18, 1985, he scored his first goal in a 3-0 home win over Belgium. The defender played his first international match for Italy against Switzerland on November 15, 1986 . The highlight of his national team career was his appointment to the Italian squad for the European Football Championship in 1988 . Francini was not used in the tournament and then only completed one game for the national team.
