Giovanni La Via

Giovanni La Via (born June 28, 1963 in Catania , Sicily ) is an Italian politician ( PdL , NCD , Forza Italia ). He was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2019 .

Life and political career

La Via studied agricultural science at the University of Catania and obtained a doctorate in agricultural economics and agricultural policy. He then worked at the university as a research assistant, associate professor and later full professor as well as an appraiser for research projects of the European Union and as head of the department for agricultural economics and evaluation.

As a non-party, he was from 2006 to 2009 the councilor for agriculture and forestry of the Sicily region under the regional presidents Salvatore Cuffaro and Raffaele Lombardo .

For the 2009 European elections , he stood in the constituency of the Italian Islands for Silvio Berlusconi's center-right party Il Popolo della Libertà (PdL) and was elected to the European Parliament with over 145,000 preferential votes . There he joined the Group of the European People's Party , was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (2009-10), the Committee on Budgets (2010-14), a delegate in the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and in the Euro- NEST . From February 2013 he was chairman of the Italian delegation in the EPP Group and from May 2013 a member of the Group Bureau. In the course of the split in the PdL in November 2013, La Via joined the Nuovo Centrodestra (NCD) party led by the Sicilian Angelino Alfano , which continued to support the Letta coalition government in the Italian parliament . But he remained a board member of the EPP Group.

In the 2014 European elections , La Via was the top candidate on the joint list of the NCD and Unione di Centro in the constituency of the Italian islands and was re-elected with around 56,000 preferential votes. He was then chairman of the committee on the environment, public health and food safety (until January 2017, then ordinary member) and delegate for relations with South Africa. In March 2017, the NCD became the Alternativa Popolare (AP). This belonged to La Via until he switched to Berlusconi's Forza Italia party in February 2018 . For the European elections in 2019 La Via occurred not more, as the regional coordinator of Forza Italia in Sicily, Gianfranco Micciché , rejected his candidacy.
