Girls in Hawaii
Girls in Hawaii is a Belgian indie pop band.
history
In 2000, Antoine Wielemans and Lionel Vancauwenberghe started recording songs with an 8-track recorder and a few months later they formed the band by recruiting their brothers and two friends: Denis Wielemans, Brice Vancauwenberghe, Christophe Léonard and Daniel Offermann.
In May 2002 they signed with 62TV Records and shortly afterwards the French music magazine Magic wrote about their first demo: “Simplicity, efficiency and precision close to perfection, many ideas, their music reminds us of Grandaddy , Blonde Redhead and even dEUS ”.
In November 2002 they won Studio Brussel 's Demopoll, a competition in which Studio Brussel listeners choose their favorite demo from hundreds of bands.
Girls in Hawaii's first release was Found in the Ground: The Winter EP in early 2003, after which the band toured Belgium and France. In the meantime, they started recording what would become their first LP.
From Here To There was released in Belgium in November 2003 and in Europe in spring 2004. The album was well received across Europe where the band went on a promotional tour: Belgium, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. The album was later released in Japan, and China Shop Music released it in the US in October 2005 . The band began touring the US west coast in April 2006.
Their second album, Plan Your Escape , was released in Europe in February 2008. Producer Jean Lamoot, who has also worked with French artists such as Noir Désir and Alain Bashung , recorded it in old houses in the Ardennes . The album, more complex and eclectic than the previous one, includes twelve tracks, including the first single, This Farm Will End Up in Fire . The band toured Europe with the album in 2008.
In February 2009, Not Here - a documentary about the band's life on tour - was released on DVD.
On May 30, 2010, 28-year-old drummer Denis Wielemans died in a car accident in Brussels.
In 2012 the band started working on their third album, Everest . The album was released in September 2013.
