Girolamo Benivieni
Girolamo Benivieni (* 1453 in Florence ; † 1542 there ) was an Italian poet. He was a member of the Platonic Academy and wrote mainly religious poems, numerous lauden and allegorical eclogues .
Life
Girolamo Benivieni was an important figure in both literary and political circles in his hometown of Florence. He was friends with the humanistic poet and philosopher Giovanni Pico della Mirandola . These two belonged to a community of intellectuals that Lorenzo de Medici once supported. This coterie broke up under the influence of the Dominican reformer Girolamo Savonarola .
Benivieni therefore turned his back on poetry to write songs to accompany the "burning of vanities" that Savonarola's young followers organized. In addition, he now translated the teachings of Savonarola from Latin .
He later retired from public life. Nonetheless, his advice was sought in the 1520s and 1530s by both sides, the Medici and the Republicans .
