Gitta Escher (born March 18, 1957 in Nordhausen , after marrying Gitta Sommer ) is a former German gymnast . Your home club was the SC Chemie Halle .

Gitta Escher won the all- around at the 1970 Spartakiad as well as on the floor and on the balance beam. In 1974 she took third place on the floor in the GDR championship. In 1975 she finished second behind Richarda Schmeißer in the GDR championship in the all-around competition and won the horse jump and on the ground. In 1976 Gitta Escher won the all-around competition, on the floor and on the balance beam, and took second place behind Carola Dombeck in the horse vault . In Montreal at the 1976 Olympics , she finished sixth in the eight-fight and third place with the team. She made it into the device finals on three machines; she took fifth place in the horse jump and sixth place on the floor and on the balance beam.

After her career, the trained sports teacher became a gymnastics trainer and choreographer at SC Chemie Halle.
