Giulio Cesare Polerio
Giulio Cesare Polerio , (* 1548 in Lanciano , † 1612 in Rome ) was an Italian chess master .
The name Polerio stands for the "golden age" of Italian chess. Together with Giovanni Leonardo da Cutri and the Sicilian Paolo Boi , he led the game of chess to high bloom in Italy . Through the sustained work of these masters, the focus of the chess scene of that time clearly shifted from Spain to Italy.
Polerio was not only a strong chess player, he was also an excellent and highly respected theorist. In 1560 he wrote an excellent treatise on the two-knight game, followed by many analyzes . The game he played against Domenico in Rome in 1600 has been preserved and is still of theoretical interest today:
- 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 7. Qf3 + Ke6 8. Nc3 Sce7 9. d4 c6 10. Bg5 h6 11. Bxe7 Bxe7 12. 0–0– 0 Rf8 13. De4 Rxf2 14. dxe5 Bg5 + 15. Kb1 Rd2 16. h4 Rxd1 + 17.Rxd1 Bxh4 18.Nxd5 cxd5 19.Rxd5 Qg5 20.Rd6 + Ke7 21.Rg6 and 1: 0
Polerio went to Madrid with Leonardo da Cutri and Paolo Boi in 1575 to compete, so to speak, in the lion's den at the court of King Philip II against the best players in Spain , Ruy López and Alfons Seran , in the first international tournament in chess history . While the two Italian champions were playing, Polerio limited himself to the role of advisor and coach . His enormous theoretical knowledge contributed decisively to the fact that Leonardo could win the competition against López 3-2. Philip II, who watched all the games, gave him 1,000 scudi .
After returning to Rome, Polerio became Italy's best player. His notes received recognition and attention beyond the borders of the country.
