Giulio Vivanti
Giulio Vivanti (born May 24, 1859 in Mantua , † November 19, 1949 in Milan ) was an Italian mathematician and mathematician.
Vivanti studied at the University of Turin with the Laureate degree in engineering in 1881 and at the University of Bologna with the Laureate degree in mathematics in 1883. After his habilitation (libero docente) he taught at the Scuola Normale in Padua from 1892 to 1895 and then became extraordinary Professor of Analysis at the University of Messina . In 1908 he was back in Pavia and from 1924 at the University of Milan. In 1929 he founded the Instituto di Matematica there with Oscar Chisini and Gian Antonio Maggi .
With Luigi Berzolari and Duilio Gigli , he published the Enciclopedia delle matematiche elementari e complementi in 7 volumes from 1930 to 1950 , published by Hoepli in Milan and reprinted several times.
He dealt mainly with function theory, the calculus of variations and set theory. As a math historian, he is best known for his contribution to calculus in the 18th century in the fourth volume of Moritz Cantor's lectures on the history of mathematics .
