Giuseppe Canovai

Giuseppe Canovai (born December 27, 1904 in Rome , † November 11, 1942 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was a Catholic priest , diplomat of the Holy See and founder of the canonically established lay association Familia Christi .

Life

Canovai studied law at the Roman University of La Sapienza and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University and graduated in both subjects in 1926. He then began to study theology at the Gregorian. In 1929 he entered the seminary at the Almo Collegio Capranica in Rome. In 1930 he completed his theology studies with the Italian Laurea and then studied canon law until 1932. He was ordained a priest on May 3, 1931 . In 1932 he became a chaplain . In 1937 he became diocesan assistant of the Catholic student association FUCI . In 1937 he founded the lay association, which was to be established in 1938 as canonically approved with the name Familia Christi . In 1939 Canovai entered the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy and on January 1, 1940, he was sent as an auditor to the nunciature in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After a short stay in the Nunciature in Chile, he returned to Buenos Aires in 1942, where he died on November 11th. His remains were transferred to Rome in 2007.

The discovery of his spiritual diary, which he had kept since 1919, earned him the reputation of a saintly man. The beatification process has opened but has not yet been completed.
