Giuseppe De Sanctis (born June 21, 1858 in Naples , † June 18, 1924 there ) was an Italian portrait and history painter and art teacher.

His father Cesare, a businessman, was friends with Giuseppe Verdi . Verdi became Giuseppe's godfather.

De Sanctis studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli and was a student of Domenico Morelli , Filippo Palizzi and Gioacchino Toma .

With one of his works "La preghiera della sera in Bysanzio" (The Evening Prayer in Byzantium) he won a silver medal at the exhibition in Palermo in 1886 . The painting was acquired by King Umberto II .

He painted another monumental work on Byzantine themes: " Queen Theodora ", which brought him a great success in Venice.

He also worked abroad, in London and particularly in Paris , where he became a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Pascal Adolphe Dagnan-Bouveret and, like other Italian artists of his time, painted for the art merchant Jean-Baptiste Michel Adolphe Goupil.

In 1890 he became a co-founder of "Circolo artistico di Napoli". He was appointed honorary professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and Urbino and from 1901 taught etching at the Naples Art Academy as the successor to Domenico Morelli.
