Giuseppe Fioroni (born October 14, 1958 in Viterbo ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD). From May 17, 2006 to May 8, 2008, he was Minister of Education in the second Prodi cabinet .

Political career

Fioroni studied medicine and surgery at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome and initially worked as an internist and university lecturer. In addition to his political offices and ongoing research at the Gemelli Clinic , he also has a seat on the boards of the Supreme Health Institute ( Istituto Superiore di Sanità ) and the Supreme Institute for Prevention and Safety at Work ( Istituto Superiore di Prevenzione e Sicurezza sul Lavoro ) .

In his early years Fioroni was involved in Christian Democratic youth and scout organizations and became chairman of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC) in his hometown of Viterbo. After his mandates in the city council, then in the provincial council of Viterbo , he was elected mayor of the city in 1989 and at that time (until 1995) was the youngest mayor in an Italian provincial capital. After the DC collapsed, Fioroni belonged to the Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI).

In the 1996 parliamentary elections, he was elected to the Italian House of Representatives as a direct candidate for the center-left alliance L'Ulivo in the Viterbo constituency. He became health policy spokesman for the Partito Popolare Italiano , whose organizational management he took over in 1999. After his re-election in the 2001 parliamentary elections via the Sardinia regional list , Fioroni joined the successor party Democrazia è Libertà - La Margherita , in which he was initially responsible for social policy and then for the municipal associations.

The elections in April 2006 also confirmed his seat in parliament. Fioroni was appointed Minister of Education ( Ministro della Pubblica Istruzione ) in the center-left government of Romano Prodi in the 15th legislative period . On May 23, 2007 he was one of the signatories of the initiative to found the rallying party Partito Democratico .

Within the PD, Fioroni founded and led the Christian Democratic and left Catholic movement Quarta Fase together with Dario Franceschini . In February 2014, he was the only member of the party executive to vote against the PD joining the Party of European Socialists . From 2014 to 2018, Fioroni chaired the parliamentary committee of inquiry into the abduction and death of Aldo Moro . In the 2018 parliamentary elections, he ran again as a direct candidate in the Viterbo constituency, but was not elected.

Fioroni is married and has one son.
