Giuseppe Giovanni Guarneri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Giuseppe Giovanni Battista Guarneri ( Joseph Guarnerius filius Andreae ; born November 25, 1666 in Cremona , † 1739 ibid) was an Italian violin maker.

Giuseppe Giovanni Guarneri was the second son of the founder of the Guarneri family of violin makers , Andrea Guarneri . In the 1690s he built several high quality cellos in his father's workshop. After his father's death in 1698, he took over the family business. After 1700, violins were made under his direction, the quality of which was significantly improved under the influence of his brother Pietro Guarneri I. From around 1715 he was supported in his work by his sons Pietro Guarneri II and Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri . The latter became the most famous violin maker of the family under the name of Joseph Guarnerius del Gesù (Giuseppe del Gesù). With the particularly high-quality instruments made between 1715 and 1720, it is not clear whether they are late works by Giuseppe Giovanni Guarneri or early works by his son. Although Guarneri managed the workshop in Cremona for almost twenty years, no instruments from his hand have survived since 1720.
