Giuseppina Maria Nicolini
Giuseppina Maria "Giusi" Nicolini (born March 5, 1961 in Lampedusa ) is a former mayor of the Italian municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa .
Life
Giusi Nicolini grew up in Lampedusa. At the age of 23 she became deputy mayor. She campaigned for environmental protection on the Mediterranean island, so that the well-known Rabbit Bay was designated as a nature reserve that is also accessible to bathers. Because of her commitment, she was exposed to hostility and arson attacks.
Services
In May 2012, Giusi Nicolini was elected mayor of the municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa in the local elections. In the year she took office, she already attracted attention with a haunting letter about the refugee problem.
“I am indignant at the indifference that seems to have infected everyone. I am indignant about the silence of Europe, which has just received the Nobel Peace Prize, and says nothing, although the number of deaths here suggests that it is war. I am more and more convinced that European immigration policy accepts the death of these people in order to curb the migration flows. Maybe she even sees them as a deterrent. But if for these people the journey on the boats is the last glimmer of hope, then I think that their death is a shame for Europe. "
Shortly after the refugee tragedy off Lampedusa with over 300 deaths on October 3, 2013, she gave a speech at the 2013 EU summit , in which she called for a new European asylum and immigration law.
She was voted out of office in 2017.
