Franzjosef Schneider (also Franz Josef Schneider ; nickname "Freudeblömche"; * April 8 or April 13, 1888 in Honnef ; † December 10, 1972 ibid) was a German hometown poet whose works were mainly devoted to his hometown Bad Honnef .

Life

Schneider was the youngest son of a master painter and house painter from Honnef and his wife , who came from Bruchhausen and last lived in Rheinbreitbach before their marriage . From 1899 he attended the higher private boys' school in Honnef (today's Siebengebirgsgymnasium ), which was initially located in the former Hontes parish hall . His house was initially at Hauptstrasse 35 or 37, later on the corner of Rommersdorfer Strasse and Clemens-Adams-Strasse. Professionally, he worked for the Honnefer Volkszeitung for more than three decades .

At the age of 20, Schneider gave his first hand-made speech for a local carnival club . He was an active carnivalist. His first book was published in 1922/23 in honor of his hometown of its millennium as a collection of nine stories and poems with the title Freudeblömche , under which it became known - a common name in the region for lily of the valley . In his early creative period he wrote novels that were supposed to depict the world of a small town with a rural character, even beyond the local context. Later he turned almost exclusively to topics of his hometown. Among other things, he translated the Lord's Prayer into Honnef dialect. Schneider published a series of texts called Letters from Home which could be subscribed to. During his lifetime he was one of the most famous personalities in his hometown, in 1968 the city honored him on the occasion of his 80th birthday with a reception in the Kurhaus .

“[Schneider's] novels get their lasting value above all through the depiction of the sunken, patriarchal world of life and work in a small town that is still determined by a village, with its festivals, customs and unmistakable originals. (…) In [his] dialect stories, the entire rich vocabulary of the Honnef dialect is kept alive. Schneider's essential importance is also in this area. "

Schneider succumbed to severe liver disease in 1972 after being hospitalized for over five weeks and was buried in the New Cemetery in his hometown. A street in the south of Bad Honnef is named after him. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his death, a memorial event was held in the Kurhaus in March 1998. On November 7, 1998, a memorial donated by a local couple in the form of a sculpture by Schneider made of Brohler volcanic rock was inaugurated in honor of Schneider at the confluence of Steinstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse. The square was named "Freudeblömche-Platz".
