Givʿat HaMatos

Giv'at HaMatos ( Hebrew גִּבְעַת הַמָּטוֹסor Arabic غفعات همتوس) is a neighborhood in East Jerusalem .

Giv'at HaMatos is located in the south of Jerusalem and is surrounded by Talpiot in the north, Gilo and Beit Safafa in the west, and Bethlehem and Har Choma in the south.

history

The neighborhood was founded in 1991. In December 2012, the quarter was to be expanded by 2,610 apartments. However, the European Union and the USA rejected enlargement. In November 2016, the construction of 2,600 apartments in Giv'at HaMatos was approved.

Surname

Giv'at HaMatos means in German: "airplane hill". The place got its name after a small twin-engine Israeli Air Force aircraft crashed there on June 6, 1967, the second day of the Six Day War , after being hit by Jordanian anti -aircraft artillery. The pilot, Lieutenant Dan Giv'on ( Hebrew דן (דני) גבעון) died in the process.
