Talpiot ( Hebrew תלפיות Talpiyot , German high defense tower ) is a suburb in the southeast of Jerusalem . The quarter in the west of the city, together with the neighboring Rechavia, is known above all as an exclusive posh suburb, in which important thinkers, scientists, politicians and cultural workers of the State of Israel have repeatedly lived over the decades .

history

In 1921, the architect and city planner Richard Kauffmann submitted plans for a garden suburb of around 800 houses for Jerusalem. The settlement of the Talpiot area by Jewish settlers began in 1922. The place was named after a biblical verse from the Song of Solomon 4: 4: "Your neck is like a tall defensive tower of David."

As a result of the unrest around Hebron in 1929, the place was temporarily evacuated by the settlers. The British maintained the Allenby Camp ( Hebrew מחנה אלנבי; Machane Allenby) in the area of Talpiot, which was occupied by members of the Hagana in Operation Kishon in May 1948 . After the War of Independence in 1948, the place initially bordered directly on parts of the country ruled by Jordan. After the Six Day War in 1967, the residential development and the number of inhabitants increased, areas previously declared by the UN as no man's land were built on and an industrial area was created .

At the end of the 1930s there was a boarding school for children and young people's Aliyah with German children in North Talpiot, the further history of its residents to date was presented in a German documentary film in 2008.

Grave finds

In 1980 the so-called Talpiot grave was discovered, in which the bones of a "Jesus, son of Joseph" are said to have been buried.

In 1990 a burial place from the 1st century BC was opened in Talpiot . BC, which is discussed in research as a possible family grave of the Kajaphas clan. In addition, other burial sites have been found that have helped to analyze ancient burial customs of Judaism in more detail.

Events

During a wedding celebration with about 600 guests on May 24, 2001, the third floor of a building (a former factory hall that had been converted into a huge hall for weddings called "Versailles") in Talpiot broke due to a design flaw , bribery and botch Construction (the unauthorized "Pal-Kal" system of the engineer Eli Ron was used contrary to the regulations), 23 people were killed and more than 300 injured, some seriously, in the most serious non-weapon accident in Israel to date.
