NGC 5746 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky . It is an estimated 77 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 170,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 5740 , it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair KPG 434 and together they are members of the NGC 5746 group ( LGG 386 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5738 and IC 1054 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 1983P was observed here.
The object was discovered by William Herschel on February 24, 1786 .
