The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 2001 after the US geophysicist Per Gjelsvik from the University of Wisconsin – Madison , who was involved in aeromagnetic surveying work in the area of the Transantarctic Mountains bordering the Ross Ice Shelf between 1963 and 1964 .
