Minden Glacis Bridge

The Minden Glacis Bridge is a suspension bridge designed by Jörg Schlaich over the Weser in the East Westphalian city of Minden , usable for pedestrians and cyclists. It connects the Minden city center with the large car park on Kanzlers Weide on the other bank of the Weser.

history

After a long discussion, the bridge was built in 1995 and connects the southern part of the right bank of the Weser and the Kanzlers Weide large car park with the city center of Minden at the Weserglacis . Above all, the change in the view of the Porta Westfalica from Minden in the north German lowlands was discussed.

The Stuttgart civil engineer Jörg Schlaich won the competition. He constructed a light suspension bridge that is 177 meters long, spanning the Weser in 103 meters with a 3.50 meter wide concrete ramp and is suspended from two 22 meter high tubular steel masts. As a result, the view of the panorama of Porta Westfalica is only slightly impaired.

The southern side of the bridge facing Porta Westfalica is illuminated in blue at night. This illumination is part of a blue band of light that continues from the city over the bridge to the east and includes the Minden ship mill .

In April 2016, the bridge was closed to cyclists because the railings were too low for cycling. An additional rope installed in November 2016 to raise the railing to the legally required height of 1.30 m enabled the bridge to be used by cyclists.

Awards

The bridge was awarded the "Traffic design award 2000" for innovative architecture in the "Pedestrian Bridges" category. In 1998, the bridge was included in the new city logo of the city of Minden on the occasion of the 1200th anniversary.
