Glasgow City Halls

The Glasgow City Halls are a former market hall with an attached community hall in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is not to be confused with the Glasgow City Chambers , the City Hall of Glasgow.

history

The building complex has a complex history. It begins with the establishment of a market hall in 1817, which has been revised and expanded many times over the years. The building is roughly divided into separate trading areas for fruit, vegetables and cheese as well as associated storage buildings. In 1841 a building for the community hall was added. The northern part of the complex, which once occupied the entire square, has since been demolished. Starting in 2000 the complex was restored and redeveloped. The former community hall was converted into an event hall with around 1000 seats, which was opened in 2003. The market hall was developed into a shopping mall for gourmet products.

description

The Glasgow City Halls are located east of Glasgow city center. The Albion Street in the east, the Bell Street to the south and the Candleriggs the west limit the complex. The facades are designed in the historicizing Italianate style . The striking differences in the design of the individual building parts are revealed by the step-by-step construction, which can be traced back to the building history. Recurring design elements include Corinthian or Ionic columns or pilasters as well as friezes . Round arches can be found along the Candleriggs, the complex's most elaborate facade. Partly the windows with cornices are suspected . Individual shops with flat shop windows are set up along the streets.
