The Glatte Aal in Rostock is a short cross street in the historic center of the Hanseatic city , which connects the southwest corner of the Neuer Markt with the Kistenmacherstraße . On the west side you will find the Garbräterstrasse . The smooth eel is part of the former Rostock medium- sized town .

history

The smooth eel was mentioned for the first time in the city books in 1514, but the same street under the name Goldschmiedestraße has already been documented in 1511. Both names were used alternatively until 1753, when the designation smooth eel became established . The interpretation of the street name Glatter Aal, which, by the way, can also be found in Wismar , is difficult because a direct relationship to fishing can be ruled out. One hypothesis says that there was an inn of the same name in Glatten Aal, according to another, attempts were made to grab eels from water tubs on this street in the Middle Ages at folk festivals .

The north side of the smooth eel differed considerably from its south side. While on the north side there were backyards and farm buildings of the houses on the south-west side of the Neuer Markt, the south side of the Glatten Eel served as an extension of the south side of the Neuer Markt and was accordingly built on with gabled houses of wealthy Rostock citizens.

The smooth eel was completely destroyed in the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942 . In the 1950s, suitable new buildings were built on both sides of the street. On the north side at the corner of Kistenmacherstraße there is an administration building with an attractive gable. In the post-war period, the term “Glatter Eal” was also used for a space that had become "free" in the course of the bombing raids in the area of Wallstrasse, Kistenmacherstrasse, Garbräterstrasse, Rostocker Heide and Rungestrasse. The Rostock weekly market moved to this square after the Neuer Markt was converted into a parking lot in the GDR era. Since 2003 the market has been held again on the Neuer Markt, while the place at the Glatten Eal now serves as a parking lot.

A possible rebuilding of this large, war-related open space and its timing are currently uncertain.
