history

Kistenmacherstraße was first mentioned in 1349 under its Latin name platea cistificum , but indirectly noted as early as 1288. In fact, it was the domicile of box makers, i.e. carpenters, for centuries .

The street was of great importance in medieval-early modern Rostock, as the carpentry trade was a distinguished profession in the Hanseatic Rostock. In addition, the street was in direct proximity to the Neuer Markt and was the connection between Marienkirche and Johanniskloster .

The development on Kistenmacherstraße was very uneven: on the northeast side between Blutstraße (today Kröpeliner Straße) and Glattem Aal there were backyards and farm buildings for the gabled houses on the Neuer Markt , while on the northwest side there were magnificent gabled houses. The most famous of these houses stood on the corner of Garbräterstraße until 1942 and had a Renaissance gable , which is rare in Rostock . The south side was surrounded by stalls and transepts.

In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942, the south side of Kistenmacherstraße was completely destroyed, the section north of the corner of Glatter Aal was largely preserved. Today, the rear walls of the buildings are located on the south-east side in Steinstrasse , while a parking lot extends on the south-west side, up to Buchbinderstrasse .
