Gliding instead of rushing
Glides instead of rushing in Austria a campaign for a fuel-efficient behavior of motorists in traffic. It was started by the ÖAMTC around 1980 with a sticker campaign and press releases and has since continued with various events, symposia and analyzes.
The campaign advocates more even driving with anticipatory adjustment of the speed and sufficient distance from the vehicle in front to avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration. Further advantages are the protection of the nerves of the driver and the front passenger as well as a significant reduction in the likelihood of accidents , in particular by paying more attention and reducing rear-end collisions .
The start of the campaign was accompanied by the counter slogan Hetzt die Gleiter , which was also contained on anonymous stickers produced and distributed . The campaign and counter-campaign also caused a sensation in the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the daily newspaper Die Welt , according to which there had been a guerrilla war between motorists and even serious accidents with fatal consequences, research by the magazine auto, motor und sport proved to be exaggerated: Inquiries about agitation and gliding accidents in various Austrian federal states had caused astonishment according to the magazine in 1980.
Traffic analysis
A study carried out in 2001 showed that restless driving styles and stress behind the wheel cause significantly more driving errors, regardless of age or gender. Attention to other road users, cyclists and pedestrians is reduced by half, and road signs are overlooked up to three times more often.
Alluding to the counter-motto at the time, “Chase the gliders”, ÖAMTC technician Stefan Kerbl emphasizes that fuel-efficient driving by no means means “sneaking”. Tests have shown that "anticipatory and therefore economical driving even saves time" .
“Borrowing” the slogan for other areas
The slogan “Gliding instead of rushing”, coined by auto touring editor Walter Nausch, led to many discussions right at the beginning of the campaign in Austria, even though the majority agreed.
