Broken during the first traffic jam in 1923 |
The Gleno Dam (Diga del Gleno) in the Valle di Scalve ( Val di Scalve ) in the province of Bergamo in Italy broke on December 1, 1923; several hundred people died in the disaster.
The dam
The dam was built from 1918 to 1923. It was a masonry pillar dam (vaulted dam) and one of the first of its kind. Originally, a curved gravity dam was planned. The gorge in the valley underground was initially closed with a 23 m high plug made of rubble masonry. Thus the lower part of the dam consisted of a weight dam that was 27 m wide and 80 m long. In order to save money, the planning for the upper, 29.5 m high section was converted to a series of vaulted dams. Before this was approved, the dam was already built and half of the construction costs were saved. It got its name from the 2852 m high mountain Monte Gleno.
The dam wall was around 52.5 m high and 260 m long. Other data speak of 56, 43.6, 35 or 29 m in height and 225 or 150 m in length. According to various sources, the storage capacity of the reservoir was 3.9 or 5.4 million m³ and the lake was 4 km long. The height of the water level at full damming was 1548 m slm. The dam was used to generate electricity from hydropower ; the power station had an output of 3728 kW.
The break
The dam broke shortly after completion when it was first dammed, when it was dammed up to the overflow after heavy rainfall, on December 1, 1923 at around 7:15 a.m. The cause was structural failure by sliding; the wall slipped on the plug and on the smooth rock. The center of the village of Bueggio was destroyed. The number of dead is given as 356, 500 or 600. The tidal wave finally poured into Lake Iseo .
The dam was not rebuilt. On the road from Colere to Vilminore di Scalve , near the village of Pianezza, you can see the ruins of the dam.
