The Glitter Band began as a backing band to Gary Glitter and released songs from 1974 without Gary. She is one of the most famous representatives of glam rock . What was special was that two drummers played at the same time. The group split up in 1977, but came back together again in 1981.

history

When Gary Glitter's first single, Rock and Roll Parts 1 and 2, became a number two hit in England, he realized he would need a band. He contacted his manager John Rossall , who was the musical director of the "Boston Show Band" at the time. With small changes in personnel it was initially accompanied, while the instrumental tracks on Glitters studio recordings and hits mostly from producer and co-author of "The Glittermen" and later "The Glitter Band," which Gary Glitter in TV shows and at live performances Mike Leander were recorded . After Ray Moxley was kicked out of the band in 1972, the band initially had no bass player. He was replaced by John Springate from The Foundations .

In 1973, John Rossall suggested to Mike Leander that the band should record their own records. Leander, who also took over the productions for the Glitter Band, responded, but the first recordings were discarded. The band eventually recorded Angel Face . Before that, they had some live performances with their own material as well as cover versions from the 50s and 60s.

In March 1974, Angel Face was released on Bell Records and immediately reached number 4 in the UK. Other hit singles such as Just for You and Let's Get Together Again followed . John Rossall, who was the band's musical director and who had composed the first three hits with Gerry Shephard , left the group in late 1974. By 1976, the Glitter Band had released three albums and a "greatest hits" compilation. With People Like You and People Like Me , written by Gerry Shephard and John Springate , they had their last hit in early 1976. Since the sales figures then fell significantly and glam rock was replaced by new music trends such as disco or the then newly emerging punk rock , the Glitter Band separated from Bell, signed a contract with CBS Records and shortened its name to "G Band". In 1977, however, the band broke up. In the 1980s, the musicians reunited for occasional appearances as The Glitter Band.

Guitarist Gerry Shephard died in May 2003. John Rossall and Harvey Ellison, the two saxophonists, still perform under the name The Glitter Band. Pete Phipps tours with his own “Glitter Band” and is also involved in Brian Connolly's (†) Sweet successor band “BC Sweet”. John Springate lives on the Costa del Sol in Spain, is a music producer and entertainer. Tony Leonard plays in his own band called "Soultime".
