history

Global Air was founded in Guadalajara in February 1990 under the name Damojh Aerolíneas SA de CV . The operative business started in 2003. The company was initially located at Mexico City Airport until December 2011 and then built new hangars at Celaya Airport , Guanajuato .

The Mexican civil aviation authority said it had banned Global Air from operating in 2010 and 2013, but then lifted the ban when security concerns were declared to have been resolved.

On May 18, 2018, a Boeing 737-200 Adv. ( Aircraft registration number XA-UHZ) of the company crashed on Cubana flight 972 in Havana . In response to this crash, Mexican authorities provisionally revoked the airline's license on May 21, 2018. Global Air had to cease flight operations until further notice. It should be checked whether the company has violated the law.

Incidents

  • On November 4, 2010, a Global Air Boeing 737-200 ( aircraft registration XA-UHY) had to make an emergency landing in Puerto Vallarta , Mexico due to a technical defect in the nose landing gear. This led to the license being withdrawn from November to December 2010.
  • The license of another Global Air aircraft was revoked between October 2013 and January 2014 as a result of an unscheduled inspection after a flight captain of the company had previously reported irregularities in flight operations.
  • On May 18, 2018, a Boeing 737-200 Adv. On flight CU-972, leased to Cubana , crashed into a field near Havana International Airport shortly after take-off . Of the 113 people on board, 112 were killed and one passenger survived seriously injured.

criticism

A flight captain and a co-pilot of Global Air are said to have been banned by the Cuban authorities as early as 2010 or 2011 due to “serious technical gaps in knowledge”. Thereupon the Cubana was recommended not to rent any more aircraft from Global Air in the future.

The aviation authority of Guyana blocked the aircraft that crashed on flight CU-972 in spring 2017 due to significant safety deficiencies in its airspace.

Following the crash of Flight CU-972 on May 18, 2018, a former Global Air pilot made serious allegations against the airline. Accordingly, the aircraft were in poor condition and there were repeated problems with overheated engines, excessively high take-off weights, overworked pilots, radar failures and corrosion on the wings. He reported this to the responsible authorities in 2013. A former flight attendant announced after the crash that in November 2016 she informed the Mexican Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes about the conditions on board the aircraft, such as: B. the lack of evacuation slides, life jackets and oxygen bottles reported. As a result, it was no longer used on flights, and there were no consequences for the company. The crash of flight CU-972 came as no surprise to the former employee.
