The Global Labor University was founded in 2002 and its focus is on international economic and social policy , global governance , macroeconomics and international organization of trade union work . As secondary goals (in addition to imparting knowledge in the subject area) the university has set itself the establishment of an international network of trade union experts and the involvement of alumni in research at the GLU locations.

The university is supported by the following organizations: International Labor Organization ( ILO ), the Hans Böckler Foundation (HBS), the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development ( BMZ ).

The university has a global focus in terms of both content and organization; courses are held in Germany at the University of Kassel and in Berlin at the University of Economics and Law , in South Africa (Johannesburg) at the Witwatersrand University (WITS), in Brazil at the State University of Campinas (State of São Paulo) and in India ( Mumbai ) at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). The various locations differ in terms of their professional focus.
