Global wiring

Global wiring is a step in the layout design of integrated circuits , in which the individual signal networks of a circuit are routed along approximate wiring paths in order to embed them in detail in the subsequent fine wiring.

The complexity of modern integrated circuits with millions of networks prevents the detailed wiring of the cells from being carried out immediately after the cells have been placed. It is therefore necessary to split the wiring into two steps, a global wiring followed by a directly connected fine wiring. Since with global wiring only a rough assignment of the networks to the individual wiring areas takes place and the subsequent fine wiring uses this assignment only, it is also possible to effectively wire circuits with a large number of networks.
