The Glockenberg tunnel is a road tunnel in Koblenz ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). Since 2003, the tunnel has enabled the Pfaffendorfer Bridge to be connected to the B 42 without crossing . It is located in the Glockenberg below the Asterstein district on the right bank of the Rhine .
history
As early as the 1960s, the connection to the Pfaffendorfer Bridge on the inner city side was reorganized and rebuilt so that it did not cross. With the construction of the Südtangente Koblenz at the beginning of the 1970s, the Pfaffendorfer bridge was further relieved, as the bottleneck on the Pfaffendorfer side in particular caused traffic problems.
In order to eliminate this bottleneck, which repeatedly led to long traffic jams, the construction of the Glockenberg tunnel by Keller Grundbau GmbH began in 1991 . This enabled the right bank of the Pfaffendorfer Bridge to be connected to the B 42 without crossing. The 265 m long Glockenberg tunnel was opened on June 27, 2003 after a construction period of twelve years.
During the construction period on May 4, 1995, July 3, 1997, April 29, 2000 and September 13, 2000, an aircraft bomb from the Second World War was found and defused.
The total costs for slope stabilization, tunnel construction and expansion of the B 42 amounting to 35.6 million euros as well as the long construction time are mainly due to the difficult geological conditions.
