Career

After the end of the Second World War , Schöpf began skiing, joined the Seefeld Ski Club and developed into a good runner, especially in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. After some success in junior races, she celebrated her first victory in the giant slalom in Innsbruck in the winter of 1952/53 and achieved further podium places in the giant slalom on the Zugspitze and in her home town of Seefeld. The next winter she won the slaloms in Kitzbühel and Méribel as well as the giant slalom in Seefeld. At her first major event, the 1954 World Cup in Åre , Sweden , the then 18-year-old missed a medal by just five hundredths of a second and finished fourth in the slalom.

In the winter of 1954/55 Schöpf won the slalom in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and came second in the slalom in Kitzbühel and in the giant slalom in Vall de Núria . In the 1955/56 season she was able to win the giant slalom in Saalfelden , the slalom in Zakopane as well as the slalom and giant slalom in Seefeld and became Austrian slalom champion . She celebrated her greatest success at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo . After she only finished ninth in the giant slalom on January 27th, when she started with an injury of the Achilles tendon during training on January 25th, she won the silver medal in the slalom behind the Swiss Renée Colliard .

After the Olympic season, Schöpf surprisingly ended her career at the age of only 20.
