Glossoptosis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Glossoptosis (also Glossoptosis), from ancient Greek γλώσσα, glossa tongue and πτώσις, ptosis case, lowering, refers to the sinking of the tongue into the pharynx or a malposition with positioning of the tongue in the pharynx.

Blocking the airway poses a risk of suffocation.

It can be acquired when the muscles relax, e.g. B. with deep unconsciousness and anesthesia . The so-called “ life-saving handle ” should be used as an immediate measure .

Glossoptosis can also occur congenitally in micrognathia :

The misalignment of the tongue can block the airways and cause problems when drinking .

diagnosis

The disease can be recognized prenatally by magnetic resonance imaging and fine ultrasound .
