The DE 500 , also DE 500 C or according to the manufacturer's plate DE 500 Co , is a diesel-electric shunting locomotive from the manufacturer Gmeinder from Mosbach with three-phase drive technology. The electrical equipment was supplied by Siemens . One machine was used in trial operation at the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) in 1983 as 259 003-2 .

In addition to three deliveries in the early 1980s, including the DB locomotive mentioned above, all of which have already been taken out of service after 20 years of service and are largely scrapped, this series essentially consisted of a delivery of six locomotives from 1990 to 1991 the BASF which were different in structure from the early deliveries. These machines were in use at BASF's main plant in Ludwigshafen for their entire life. In 2015 all machines were returned to Gmeinder after 25 years of service, were parked in Mosbach and put out to tender. There was only one further delivery in 1990 to the Mülheimer VerkehrsGesellschaft for operation on their port railway . Today this machine belongs to the Bentheim Railway .
