Rock description

The yellow-brown or yellow-gray-green color of Gnodstädter sandstone is caused by limonite and the green chlorite . It is a fine-grain sandstone that is bound by feldspar and clay minerals .

Emergence

This sandstone was created by sandy deposits of a river delta on the edge of the Germanic Basin in the Keuper. It was solidified by the pressure of overlying layers.

use

Gnodstädter sandstone was mainly used regionally for the construction of house facades. Numerous regional facades were built from this sandstone. Mainly solid masonry and bricks have been made from it since the Middle Ages . Today the deposit is mainly broken for restoration work.

Due to its low level of education, numerous regional sculptures and wayside shrines were formed; but it is also used in landscaping and horticulture.
