Goatpsalm is a Russian funeral doom band founded in 2009 .

history

The bassist and singer Alex "Morkh" Shadrin, who has been active as a musician in the Russian industrial and black metal scene with groups such as Velehentor , Izakaron or Serpentrance since the 1990s , contacted the singer and multi-instrumentalist "Horth" from Black -Metal band Karna , after Shadrin had written the first pieces under the influence of Velehntor and Karna in order to create a joint project. The guitarist "Sadist" from SS-18 joined the band as a further member . As a trio, the musicians, who live in different cities, founded Goatpsalm as an exclusive studio project on the basis of their joint work. In 2010 the debut album Sonic Desterilization Of Light was recorded. While the group was working on their debut, the band decided on the name Goatpsalm, as it would correspond to the " hell they created" "permeated by darkness and chaos". The album was released in 2012 via Assault Records . The design was done by the Russian graphic artist Musta Aurinko. Sonic Desterilization Of Light received little international attention, but received positive feedback in the Russian metal and industrial scene.

In 2011 the group recorded the second, more Black Doom- oriented album, Erset La Tari . The album was released about a month after its debut, also in 2012, but through Aesthetic Death Records , which allowed Goatpsalm to appeal to a wider and international audience. In reviews, the album was mostly described as a mediocre release that did not do justice to its role models. The album was only awarded a high quality in isolated cases.

In 2014 the band constellation changed significantly with an impact on the musical concept of the group. Shadrin left Goatpsalm, but the multi-instrumentalist and singer Mikhail "Vaarwel" Saveliev and the drummer Dmytro "Kim" Gerasimov joined them. After the change of personnel, the group reoriented itself musically towards Funeral Doom. The third studio album Downstream , released in 2016, was released like the previous album via Aesthetic Death Records and received consistently positive reviews from critics.

style

The music of the first two releases was described as a mixture of Death Industrial , Dark Ambient and Black Metal and with Archon Satani , MZ. 412 and abruptly compared. The third studio album Downstream , released in 2016, mixed ambient and funeral doom, which is placed in the Thergothon tradition , with ethnic instruments.

On the first two albums, the group acted with samples such as “wind noises, dark ambient synths and evocative nasty croaking”, which were combined with varied guitar playing and occasionally “ritualistic percussion ”. Some of the presented pieces consisted of "pure sound collage [n]", which would be combined in further pieces with "a kind of very nasty [m] Depressive Black Metal ". According to the Metal District, the tempo is based on Funeral Doom while the "dominated by booming, singularized, eternally long individual guitar / bass attacks [sic!] And accompanied by all sorts of other screeching, screeching noises" "overall sound on industrial and Drone Doom and presented "quite introverted". In addition to the croaking noted by the Legacy , there was a persistent "mumbling [s], conjuring [s] whispers and growls" on some tracks.

The third album Downstream is also described as "very dark, often ritual-looking music with a high proportion of ambient". In contrast to the previous works, however, the album is “more detailed” and “more accessible” and “less bizarre”. According to metal1.de, Goatpsalm act downstream with “atmospheric sounds, clean guitar melodies, doomy riffs and a […] mixture of devout whispers and deep growls”. The instrumentation is also judged on Hateful Metal. "Ambient and atmospheric arrangements" are dominant on downstream and repeatedly "in spherical funeral doom". The instrumentation makes use of a jew's harp and acoustic guitars, among other things , which reinforces the “calm and spherical character” of the music.

The lyrics of the second album Erset La Tari were referred to as " incantations " on XXL rock . The third album Downstream was described by "Horth" as a concept album about the life, beliefs and rituals of northern European antiquity without referring to a specific era or ethnicity.
