Gobisaurus was a genus of pelvic dinosaurs from the group of Ankylosauria thatlivedin the Upper Cretaceous in East Asia.

features

From gobisaurus only have so far skulls and isolated bones found the rest of the body. The skull was very large with a length of 46 centimeters and was characterized by a unique protrusion of the ploughshare leg. Further features were the round scaly bone (squamosum) and the short row of teeth. The postcranial bones have not yet been described, probably like all ankylosaurs it was a quadruple dinosaur covered by bone scales that ate plants.

Discovery and naming

The fossil remains of Gobisaurus were discovered in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and named after the Gobi Desert . The only species and thus type species is G. domoculus . The finds are dated to the early Upper Cretaceous ( Turonian ) about 93 to 89 million years ago.

Systematics

The closest relative of Gobisaurus is likely to have been the Shamosaurus living in the same region (but which occurred earlier) . Gobisaurus and Shamosaurus form an unnamed clade, which were the sister taxons of the Ankylosaurinae, the more highly developed Ankylosauridae (see systematics of the Ankylosauridae ).
