The Godfrey Okoye University ( GOU , German Godfrey Okoye University ) is a private university in the Nigerian city of Enugu . It was founded in 2008 by the Roman Catholic priest and university professor Christian Anieke and is associated with the Enugu diocese . On November 3rd, 2009 she was accredited by the National University Commission of Nigeria (NUC).

campus

The campus is located in the Thinker's Corner in Enugu. The new main campus in Ugwuomo Nike outside the city is still under construction. 2019 was named as the opening date. The university farm is also located there.

founding

The university was named after Godfrey Okoye , the second bishop of the Enugu diocese and educational coordinator of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria .

After it was founded, the university began with 215 students, was able to allocate around 500 study places in 2011/2012 and had over 1500 students at the end of 2012. On December 7, 2013, the first graduation ceremony of Godfrey Okoye University took place in the new Jonathan Ebele Goodluck Arena on the campus in Thinker's Corner. 100 graduates received the Bachelor's degree on this day.

Strategic direction

The philosophy of Godfrey Okoye University is based on the nature of the human being as a social being seeking dialogue. Thus, the university understands education as a dialogical process for the acquisition and transfer of knowledge.

The vision of the GOU includes graduates with extraordinary learning abilities, a balanced character and a personality that consistently strives for epistemological unity.

The goals of the university are based on its philosophy: high-quality knowledge transfer for the personal development of the students, which promotes a religious, cultural and epistemological dialogue.

structure

Fundamental decisions in research and teaching as well as decisions that affect the university as a whole are made in the GOU by the university council and the rectorate of the university. The Senate is responsible for constitutional amendments and for changing the framework regulations of the university. Both professors and academic and non-academic staff sit in the Senate.

Finances

The tuition fees range from 156,500 to 169,000 Naira per semester (as of 2015/2016). This includes accommodation in the student dormitories where students live separately. The university is open to students of all nations from all ethnic and religious backgrounds. The university is financed through the semester fees and is supported by the Diocese of Enugu and benefactors from Nigeria, the USA, Germany and Austria.

Offers for students

Godfrey Okoye University offers its students not only lectures but also leisure activities. In addition to the national sport of football, traditional dances and music groups are cultivated, but also hip-hop and theater. There are general prayer times every day, each in separate rooms for the various religions.

Library

The university library supports teachers and students in obtaining information as comprehensively as possible about the current state of knowledge of a discipline as well as about the historical development of this knowledge. It provides the students, the lecturers and their assistants with specialist literature as well as with classical works. Thanks to a donation from the National Agency for the Development of Computer Technologies in 2013, the library has 15 computers, a server, printer, scanner and Internet connection via satellite, as well as air conditioning and solar panels, and thus offers students and lecturers access to more than 40,000 e-books . The printed media still play an important role for library users.

A reading room gives users direct access to the existing library holdings, a special magazine reading room, in which current issues and specialist journals can be found, offers access to more than 6000 international journals.

The librarians offer support with use and research, but also help with copying and printing.

Every new student has to attend a general course on the use of the library, which also includes scientific research on the Internet as well as legal and ethical principles for the use of information technology.
