Godfrey Mary Paul Okoye

Godfrey Mary Paul Okoye CSSp (born December 19, 1913 in Ifitedunu ( Eastern Region , Nigeria ), † March 17, 1977 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and from 1961 to 1970 the first bishop of Port Harcourt , who served in the wake of the Biafra War was dissolved. He was then bishop of Enugu .

Life

Okoye was the youngest of eight children from Okoye Nwazulu and Ada Oji. Between 1931 and 1935 he worked as a teacher and in 1933 in the seminary in Onitsha and was ordained on July 27, 1947 . In 1950 he was accepted as the second Igbo in Ireland as a priest in the Congregatio Sancti Spiritus (CSSp). His first parish was in Elele . Okoye was involved in the events of the Biafra War and his support for Biafra sparked fears among other priests that they would be targeted in the war. In 1977, shortly before a hernia operation, Okoye destroyed his personal records detailing his role in the Biafra war. He died shortly after the operation.

From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council . In 1969 he founded the Order of the Daughters of Divine Love (DDL).
