The Goerdeler-Gymnasium (GG) is a municipal high school in the city of Paderborn , named after the resistance fighter under National Socialism, Carl Friedrich Goerdeler . It is located on the western edge of the core city of Paderborn. The school, which was built in 1967, attended around 700 students in the 2017/18 school year, who were taught by 70 teachers. The school director has been the senior director of studies, Helga Lazar, since 2009. She followed Günter Wortmann (headmaster from 1993 to 2008) and the founding headmaster Alfons Kohstall, who headed the grammar school from 1967 to 1993.

history

In March 1966 the city of Paderborn decided to build a second municipal high school on the western edge of the city. It was to be the first co-educational high school in Paderborn. On September 7, 1967, the first day of school for the Municipal New Language High School for Boys and Girls in Development . Two school classes in the fifth year moved into the pavilion next to the Sankt Georg elementary school on Erzbergerstrasse. On September 10, 1969, construction work began on Goerdelerstraße for the new school building. Before it could be moved into on August 16, 1971, the rooms of the Luther School at Abdinghof were used for several years. Since the terms Gymnasium on Goerdelerstraße or Goerdeler-Gymnasium quickly caught on in common parlance , the new school officially received its current name at the end of 1972.

In 1975 the last of four construction phases was completed and in 1976 the first Abitur was completed at the Goerdeler-Gymnasium. 47 pupils received the general university entrance qualification. This was followed by the construction of the outdoor sports facilities with a lawn sports field, a 400 m running track and a hard court by 1981.

STEM-friendly school

In 2016, the grammar school was honored for its MINT focus (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) at the didacta education fair in Cologne and was awarded the “MINT-friendly school” seal.

Mathematics and at least two other natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, computer science) are taught at the Goerdeler-Gymnasium from the fifth grade to the Abitur. Schoolchildren interested in science can deepen their knowledge and skills in the science profile class, through the differentiation courses in bio-chemistry and computer science, as well as the supplementary science lessons in grades 8 and 9. In the upper level, biology, chemistry, physics and computer science are offered as subjects in addition to mathematics.

Profile classes in the trial stage

As part of the two-year test stage , when registering, students can choose special profile classes that set different priorities and thus individually promote the students' inclinations and interests.

Wind class

In the two-year wind class project, the children have been learning a wind instrument (e.g. flute, saxophone, clarinet, trombone or trumpet) borrowed from the school since 2003 in cooperation with the Paderborn Municipal Music School. From the beginning, making music together in the "class band" is in the foreground.

Science class

Since the 2013/2014 school year, the school has been offering a science class ("NaWi" class) as part of its MINT profile. In grades 5 and 6, the students of the NaWi class receive an additional profile lesson in the morning. In small study groups, the children experimentally research questions of everyday scientific phenomena from physics, chemistry and biology that go beyond the compulsory subjects of regular lessons.

Language sequence

Four modern foreign languages and Latin are taught at the Goerdeler-Gymnasium . All students start with English in Grade 5 .

After that, there are several other foreign languages ​​to choose from at several points in the school career: In grade 6, French or Latin is added as a second foreign language . The languages ​​French, Latin or Spanish are available as a third foreign language (as part of the differentiated intermediate level in compulsory elective area II) . At the beginning of the upper secondary school level, French, Spanish and Russian are offered as new foreign languages in the introductory phase .

Awards

  • School without Racism - School with Courage: In 2010 the school was awarded the title " School without Racism - School with Courage ". The school's SV has initiated numerous campaigns and projects in recent years to improve understanding between different cultures and worldviews with and for the school community, to break down prejudices and to promote togetherness.
  • Mint-friendly school: In 2016, the grammar school was honored for its MINT focus (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology) at the educational fair didacta in Cologne and awarded the “MINT-friendly school” seal.
  • ECDL test center: The school is a recognized test center for the European Computer Driving License, or ECDL (“ European Computer Driving License ”). Since 1992 the Goerdeler-Gymnasium has maintained the school partnership with the Liceum II Morawskiego in Przemysl, Poland, in particular through regular mutual visits and student exchange programs. For the participants, the focus is on the direct exchange of lifestyle habits and life goals.

John Buchan Middle School in Sennelager

This exchange program between the Goerdeler-Gymnasium and the British school abroad John Buchan Middle School in Sennelager has existed since May 2001 .

Two years after the school was founded, the support association for the Goerdeler-Gymnasium was established in 1969. The statutory goal of the association is the provision of funds for the expansion of school facilities and for the promotion of students and their education, as far as public funds are not available.

In October 1997, an association of former students was brought into being and entered in the register of associations as the “Goerdeler Alumni Club - Association of Former Students of the Goerdeler-Gymnasium Paderborn eV”. The primary aim of the association is to encourage and stimulate contact between former students and the school. The GAC organizes meetings and events to promote exchange. The Alumni Club regularly organizes career information evenings for current students with the participation of alumni to help them find a career.
