The Goetheplatz is a listed park in Freitaler district Deuben . It is located between Dresdner Strasse in the east and the Dresden – Werdau railway line in the west and is surrounded by a ring road that is also called "Goetheplatz".

Description and environment

The park has a rectangular shape and is planted with individual trees and groups of trees, between which paths lead. The center is a memorial stone decorated with a crown to King Albert of Saxony . In the northern part there is a pond with a fountain, south of the memorial stone there is a small playground.

The square is bounded in the south, west and north by the street of the same name, in the east Gabelsbergerstraße, named after Franz Xaver Gabelsberger , forms the end of the complex. The square is connected to Dresdner Straße via Gabelsbergerstraße, and there is also a traffic-calmed transition to Poststraße via “Goetheplatz”. Goetheplatz is mainly surrounded by residential developments, especially on the south and west side by four-storey apartment blocks in prefabricated construction . There are mainly three-storey town villas on the east side, while an open space is currently connected to the north side.

About a hundred meters from the square is the former Deuben town hall , today a seat of the Freital city administration. The Christ Church in Deuben is also within sight .

history

The park around 1915

The park was inaugurated on September 2, 1904, following a decisive initiative by the Deuben community leader Ernst Robert Rudelt . At that time it was called "König-Albert-Park" in honor of the Saxon king, who quickly provided financial aid to the victims of the devastating Weißeritz flood of 1897. The memorial stone with the inscription “Dedicated to the popular Saxon King Albert and the entire royal family” was dedicated to him. For the same reason, the recently inaugurated King Albert monument was erected on the Windberg .

Goetheplatz was one of the few representative parks in the region characterized by mining and industry and was therefore popular with the population. In the 1920s the square was named after the German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . During the GDR era , the maintenance of the park was partly neglected, the memorial stone was probably removed for political reasons, and the pond dried up. It was not until 1995 that the city of Freital commissioned the renovation of the park, including the renewal of the pond and fountain and the re-erection of the memorial stone.

On the now undeveloped north side of the park, the production site of the Zische abrasives factory and later of the VEB test equipment factory in Medingen was located . After the ruinous factory was demolished and cleared in 2000, numerous usage concepts were drawn up for the centrally located area, including as a location for trade and retail, nursing home, tax office and high school. An expansion of the Goethepark always played a role. So far, all attempts in this direction have failed.
