The Goethe Hiking Trail is a 28-kilometer hiking trail in the Thuringian Basin that leads from Weimar via Neckeroda to Kochberg Castle in Großkochberg and follows the path that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe often walked between 1775 and 1783.

The Goethe hiking trail is marked with a white G on a green background and has information boards and stamps in the villages along the way. A small hiking booklet on this trail is available from the Weimar Tourist Information Office.

course

Weimar , Wielandplatz - Vollersroda - Buchfart - Saalborn - Schwarza - Hochdorf - Neckeroda - Luisenturm - Großkochberg

  • Lowest point: 230 m (Weimar)
  • Highest point: 525 m (Luisenturm)

From Weimar, Großkochberg can be reached after a 6-8 hour walk, which is mostly covered on forest paths. The Goethe hiking trail is only heavily frequented on a few days a year and is also easy to navigate with an (ideally all-terrain) bike.

The hike begins behind the Weimar Goethehaus on Wielandplatz. The path leads over today's Amalien-, Rudolf-Breitscheid- and Rainer-Maria-Rilke-Straße to Gehädrich on the outskirts of Weimar. After a few kilometers, the Goetheweg reaches the Belvedere Palace . Then it goes past Vollersroda to the Waldgasthof Balsamine, from where you can overlook the Ilm Valley and the further course of the path through Buchfart.

Shortly before Buchfart , the path leads past sand-lime stone rocks into which artificial caves have been cut as refuge. On the ascent to Buchfart you pass the table beech (456 m), walk for a while on a high path and after about 1 hour descend into the small village of Saalborn. The path then leads past the newly created golf courses of the 'Krakau' estate into the Dammbachsgrund and to the “lawn banks” in the forest area south of Bad Berka and on towards Schwarza.

Dirt roads lead to Hochdorf and Neckeroda. Then it goes again through a forest area to Großkochberg. From the Luisenturm you can see the Saale Valley to the Thuringian Slate Mountains.

Worth seeing: village church in Vollersroda; medieval rock castle on the northern slope of the Ilm valley; covered historical wooden bridge and church with an important winged altar in Buchfart; Randanger and dyeing village Neckeroda; former moated castle, palace museum, lovers' theater and concert hall in Großkochberg; Luisenturm north of Großkochberg
