Golden Cadillac

Golden Cadillac

The Golden Cadillac is a creamy-sweet cocktail . The short drink contains the liqueurs Galliano and "white" Crème de Cacao , a clear cocoa liqueur, as well as cream , in the most common variant also orange juice . Due to its sweetness and the rich ingredients, it is included in the "After Dinner Cocktails", so it is not suitable as an aperitif .

history

The Golden Cadillac was probably made in the United States in the 1950s . According to a popular story, Frank Klein, at the time the bartender at Poor Red's BBQ , a grill restaurant and bar in the small town of El Dorado ( California ) that has existed since 1945, mixed the cocktail for a newly engaged couple as early as 1952 and named it after their newly acquired gold-colored one Named Cadillac . Klein have tried several recipes, known worldwide eventually became a mixture of equal parts Galliano (now Galliano L'Autentico ), crème de cacao and cream, cooked in a blender and garnish with grated chocolate, which one in today Poor Red's BBQ could order . In this simple, original recipe, the Golden Cadillac has a certain similarity to the Alexander , a creamy cocktail made from gin or brandy , crème de cacao and cream, which enjoyed great popularity in the United States in the 1930s during the alcohol prohibition . The inspiration for the name also come to the Broadway -Theaterstück The Solid Gold Cadillac by George S. Kaufman from 1953 as well as based on this same feature film of 1956 in question.

Between 1964 and 1967, the Galliano brand Golden Cadillac was promoted in an advertising campaign, and the Poor Red's BBQ became the largest consumer of Italian liquor in North America. At times the Golden Cadillac was also one of the Official Cocktails of the International Bartenders Association , but was removed from the revised list in 2011.

preparation

The simplest basic recipe consists of equal parts, for example 2 cl each  , Galliano , white (clear) Crème de Cacao and cream. The three ingredients are either, as in Poor Red's BBQ , in the electric blender with crushed ice mixed or in a cocktail shaker with ice cubes shaken and then in a pre-cooled possible Cocktailschale strained . Chocolate flakes or cocoa powder are suitable as decoration.

In a common variant, the basic recipe is supplemented by around two parts (4 cl in the example) of freshly squeezed orange juice , which not only gives the cocktail a fresher and lighter note, but also emphasizes its “golden” color. This recipe is very similar to the Golden Dream , which emerged from a mixing competition in 1959 and consists of Galliano, orange liqueur, orange juice and cream. In the Golden Cadillac, the proportion of Galliano liqueur is often slightly reduced compared to the other ingredients, as in Charles Schumann's recipe with 2 cl Crème de Cacao (white) , 1 cl Galliano, 2 cl cream and 4 cl orange juice.

The choice of yellow Galliano liqueur makes a clear difference in taste , the recipe of which has been changed significantly over the decades and which is now available in two very different versions. The supposedly original version is Galliano L'Autentico , a herbal liqueur with a clear aniseed note, which for a long time was only sold in its country of origin, Italy. In other markets, including Germany, until 2008 only a much milder vanilla liqueur was offered under the name Galliano Smooth Vanilla . Since 2010, both the mild vanilla and the much more intense herbal variant ( Vanilla or L'Autentico ) have been sold internationally, both of which are suitable for mixing a Golden Cadillac, depending on the desired form. In the Poor Red's BBQ , Galliano L'Autentico is mixed with.

In the extensive recipe collection Diffordsguide , a "silky-smooth, but not very strong" recipe for the Golden Cadillac with 3 cl Crème de Cacao , 1.5 cl Galliano L'Autentico , 4.5 cl freshly squeezed orange juice, 1.5 cl each Milk and cream as well as 2  dashes (spritzes) of orange bitters listed. All ingredients are shaken on ice in the cocktail shaker and double-strained in a pre-cooled cocktail bowl , finally nutmeg is rubbed over the finished drink.
