The International Bartenders Association ( IBA , also IBA ) is an international umbrella organization of various national professional associations of bartenders . Around 40,000 bartenders around the world are organized in the IBA through the respective national associations.

purpose

The purpose of the association is the exchange of experiences, the transfer of knowledge on an international level and the organization of mixed competitions such as the World Cocktail Competitions according to uniform "IBA rules", which mostly also apply to the competitions in the member associations. In seminars (so-called "Training Centers") training and further education opportunities are offered.

The association also strives for international standards in the preparation of cocktails and maintains a list of official recipes ( Official IBA Cocktails ).

history

The IBA was founded on February 24, 1951 in the saloon of the Grand Hotel in Torquay (England) by representatives of seven European bartender associations, including the Swiss Barkeeper Union (SBU). WJ Bill Tarling, the then representative of the United Kingdom Bartender Guild (UKBG) , was elected as the first President. The German Barkeeper Union (DBU, formerly IBU) was admitted as the ninth member in 1953, followed by the Austrian Barkeeper Union (Ö.BU) in 1957 .

Initially, the IBA was not officially registered in any country. A registration in Singapore took place only in 2006 under the incumbent President Derrick Lee since 2005. The 35th Cocktail World Championships were held in Berlin in August 2009.

In February 2018, the DBU decided to leave the international umbrella organization at the end of the year.

Members

Only independent professional associations of bartenders can apply for admission to the IBA (so-called Guild Membership). The statutes expressly forbid the incorporation of associations that are affiliated with a trade union or that are already members of other international bartending associations. Individuals can only obtain honorary membership, which, like associate membership, is not associated with voting rights. Associate members include spirits manufacturers who played an important role in the establishment of the IBA, who have always contributed significantly to the financing of the IBA and who significantly shape and influence the activities of the association. The statutes expressly provide for close cooperation with the spirits industry.

In 2008, 52 countries were represented with national associations in the IBA, in 2016 there were 61 and two candidates.

The following list includes both current and former members (as of 2016). (Note: A "?" In the Admission column indicates an admission after 2008 and before 2016)

Official IBA cocktails

The association maintains a list of Official IBA Cocktails . Most of them are classics that are internationally recognized and that can be found in bars around the world. At the end of 2011 the list was completely revised and expanded. Recipes were partly changed; For example, the martini is now only listed with gin in accordance with the classic preparation, as opposed to gin or vodka in the past. Drinks that were barely widespread or no longer considered up-to-date were canceled, including the amaretto cocktails God Father , God Mother and French Connection , the Orgasm and the B52 , the 1990s drinks Apple Martini and Cosmopolitan , but also the Caipirinha and the ( classic) margarita ; some of the drinks that were deleted at first appear in the list in the meantime.

The list has also been expanded to include numerous established or rediscovered classics, all over 50 years old, such as Aviation , Clover Club , Sidecar , Mint Julep , Moscow Mule , Sazerac and White Lady, as well as contemporary drinks such as Bramble , Dark 'n' Stormy , Spritz Veneziano and Tommy's Margarita .
