tequila Sunrise

The Tequila Sunrise ( Sunrise ) is a fruity, sweet cocktail made of tequila , orange juice and grenadine . It owes its name to the characteristic color gradation from yellow-orange (above) to orange to orange-red (below), as the grenadine is only added to the glass at the end and sinks down through the ice cubes. The drink is a long drink and is prepared and served in a highball glass over ice.

history

In the 1920s, the cocktails Tequila Daisy and Tequila Sunrise were mixed in the bar of the racetrack in the Mexican town of Agua Caliente ( Tijuana ) . The sunrise consisted of tequila, (lemon) lemonade, grenadine, crème de cassis and soda water. Agua Caliente is located near the California border and was a popular destination for Americans at the time of Prohibition in the United States . After the end of Prohibition in 1933, the drink was also able to spread in the USA, but the hard-to-find cassis liqueur was dispensed with and the less experienced bartenders replaced the homemade lemonade with orange juice. The hotel bar of the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix (Arizona) , on the other hand, claims that the bartender Gene Sulit invented the drink there in the late 1930s or early 1940s. This Biltmore Tequila Sunrise also lists crème de cassis as an ingredient and also tequila, fresh lime juice and soda water.

Preparation and variations

The International Bartenders Association (IBA) has the Tequila Sunrise in its list of Official IBA Cocktails in the Contemporary Classics category (for example: "contemporary classics"). For the IBA version of the long drink, 4.5  cl tequila and 9 cl orange juice are poured into a highball glass filled with ice cubes before 1.5 cl grenadine is carefully poured over it. The drink is served garnished with a slice of orange and a cocktail cherry without stirring .

As with almost all mixed drinks, there are countless other recipes and variations with different proportions and / or different ingredients, for example with real pomegranate syrup instead of artificially flavored grenadine or rounded off with a little lemon juice . By exchanging the basic spirit, a Tequila Sunrise becomes a Caribbean Sunrise (with rum ), a Vodka Sunrise , a Southern Sunrise (with Southern Comfort ) or a Malibu Sunrise (with Malibu ). A Batida Sunrise consists of Batida de Coco , pineapple juice and cherry liqueur .
