Golden Rock Inn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Golden Rock Inn ( French Domaine de Golden Rock ) is a former plantation near Gingerland on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean island state of St. Kitts and Nevis . The main building is one of the best preserved country houses in Nevis. Today there is a luxury hotel in the building.

history

The country house was mentioned in Pares West India Fortune when it was bought on mortgage from John Pinney . He built and renovated some buildings. Then the plantation became the property of Edward Huggins (around 1790). In the 1800s the building was extensively expanded. In 1899 the father of Norman Maynard became director of the plantation.

Renovations

The complex was acquired by Helen and Brice Marden who undertook extensive renovations and converted the property into a luxury hotel. The windmill from 1811 was one of the first windmills for processing sugar cane . Today it is a wedding suite. The hotel's office used to be the counting department of the plantation. The execution of the masonry is unique in Nevis, as Edward Huggins had specially master masons come from England to teach his slaves how to masonry . The dining room, the bar and the reception area emerged from a hospital for slaves , which was also made of stone masonry, but only after the slave liberation in 1813. In 1958, the building with the dimensions of 100 ft × 25 ft (30.5 × 7 , 6 m) restored and enlarged. The newly built dining room is accessible through a monumental staircase.

The originally left buildings were carefully cleaned of vegetation and show the former size of the complex. The hotel is often featured in various magazines.

garden

The renovation of the mansion was accompanied by the creation of a lush tropical garden by the American landscape architect Raymond Jungles from Miami .
