Golden Time ( Japanese ゴ ー ル デ ン タ イ ム , Gōruden Taimu ) is a light novel series by Yuyuko Takemiya with illustrations by Ēji Komatsu . It was released in Japan from 2010 to 2014 and was adapted as a manga , anime and video game.

action

The freshman Banri Tada ( 多 田 万里 ) quickly makes new friends during his first days at the law school in Tokyo and when looking for a suitable university club: Mitsuo Yanagisawa ( 柳 澤 光 央 ), the Otaku Takaya Satō ( 佐藤 隆 哉 ) and the small and lively Chinami Oka ( 岡 千 波 ). Through Yanagisawa, Banri also meets the beautiful Kōko Kaga ( 加 賀 香 子 ), who has known him since early childhood and is close friends with him. Kaga has long planned to marry Yanagisawa, and he is constantly following him. Yanagisawa became more and more a burden, which is why he secretly enrolled in Tokyo. But also here Kaga followed him, so that he tries to escape from her here too. Tada helps him, but also feels sorry for Kaga and looks for a club with her. After all, both of them go to the Japanese party club she recruits for Linda, whom they often met by chance on campus.

During the club search and the following time, both get closer. Kaga learns that Tada fell off a bridge shortly after graduating from school and has since lost all memories of the time before. In order to avoid the stress that his family constantly expected "old Banri" to return, he went to study in Tokyo from the provinces a year later and now lives alone. After a while, Banri confesses to Kaga that he fell in love with her, but at first she just wants a friendship. At the same time, Banri finds out that Linda knows him from before. They were good friends in high school and now Linda didn't dare tell him about it because she was afraid of how he would react. He learns that he was in love with her and fell off the bridge the day she tried to answer his confession of love. Linda blamed herself for this. Now both argue about it. Meanwhile, Yanagisawa has fallen in love with Chinami and confesses his love to her, but she rejects him. Kaga finally abandons her obsession with Yanagisawa and wants to be with Banri. While their relationship develops well, Banri blocks any attempt at contact by Linda until his neighbor Nana finally tricked him. They speak out and Linda wants to support Tada in his "new life".

However, Banri doesn't dare to tell Kaga about his previous relationship with Linda. Then his feelings keep returning briefly, the spirit of his old self takes possession of his body. Banri becomes seriously ill and is cared for by Kaga. She found an old photo of him and Linda and is distant because she doesn't want to ask Banri about it. When Banri later secretly takes a part-time job at a party so that he can go away with Kaga in the summer, he meets Linda there. Kaga catches her there, posing for the guests, and afterwards Banri tells her about his relationship with Linda. He now wants to completely forget his old self, Linda should too. But the spirit of his old self brings him all sorts of misfortunes as revenge. Their plans for the summer fall through, and again and again they have bad luck until the group from Banri, Kōko, Yanagisawa, Oka and Satō drives to the beach by car. Despite the delay and the rain, they have fun, but on the return journey they almost have an accident when Kōko falls asleep while driving. Her insecurity, feelings of guilt and her fear that Banri might forget her in an accident like Linda once did lead to a new crisis in their relationship. Banri promises never to forget Kōko and also to face his past.

So it happens that Banri gets on better with Linda again. Together with her he drives to the class reunion in Shizuoka. He was afraid of meeting his former classmates, all of whom he had forgotten, but he is welcomed in a friendly manner and everyone shows him consideration. Now Banri believes his old self will finally let him live his new life. Back in Tokyo, Banris and Kōko's feelings for one another have grown even stronger. Banri brought her a ring from his mother, but doesn't know when to give it to Kōko. At the Festival Club, they help Yanagisawa to get closer to Linda. He's been in love with her for a long time, but she blocks him. Banri reveals that she is unsure of herself and his feelings. His close relationship with Linda also arouses suspicion in Oka and Yanagisawa, as they do not yet know Banri's past. When the festival club makes a gig that Yanagisawa is filming, Banri's memory suddenly comes back. However, he forgets all new memories and runs away in a panic. Linda and Kōko can find him and calm him down, but Banri's fear that his old self will return and his new one will disappear is growing stronger. However, he doesn't dare to talk to Kōko about it.

Kōko and Banri decide to enlighten his friends about his past. But that evening he had another attack. When Banri Kōko finally wants to hand over the ring, she breaks up with him. The Circle of Friends is under great pressure, even more than Yanagisawa learns from Banri's old love for Linda. Since Banri fears his old self will return soon, they find each other again. During the university festival, Kōko and Banri perform with the dance club, Banri's mother is invited as a spectator. While the dance is still going on, his old memories come back; Banri forgets everything he has experienced in Tokyo. His mother takes him home, where he first goes to the hospital and then lives with his parents. He spends a lot of time with Linda without her answering his question about her love for him. Despite the notes he made, he cannot remember his time as a student, his friends, and Kōko. But one day Kōko comes to visit him. After some hesitation he recognizes her again and runs after her. With Linda's help, he can overcome his old self, which is still attached to Linda, and accept that everyone, including himself, forgets parts of his past again and again. Together with Kōko he returns to his friends in Tokyo.
