The Gombe Stream National Park is a national park in the west of Tanzania ( East Africa ), directly on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika . It covers an area of ​​around 51 km², making it one of the smallest national parks in Tanzania. It is 16 km north of Kigoma , not far from the border with Burundi .

The Gombe National Park is formed by a thin strip of old mountain forest, which is criss-crossed by deep valleys. He became famous for the chimpanzees living here and the associated Gombe Chimpanzee War , which has been observed here since 1960 by the British primate researcher Jane Goodall . Other significant animal species are z. B. olive baboons , which are also subject of intensive research for many years, Red-tailed monkeys , colobus -monkeys and Uganda colobus monkeys .

A total of 87 mammal, 367 bird, 40 reptile and 23 amphibian species as well as 1,174 plant species were documented in the park.
