Gompie was the joint project of Peter Koelewijn , music producer , and Rob Peters, director of the music label RPC. Both succeeded in the mid-1990s with the title Alice, Who the Fuck Is Alice? , an adaptation of a hit by the British band Smokie , who covered the song from New World , an international single hit .

history

The project is named after the Café Gompie in the Dutch city of Nijmegen . Smokie's hit Living Next Door to Alice from 1976 was regularly played there. At the point in the chorus where the name Alice appears, the local DJ Onno Pelser usually turned the sound off, causing the café patrons to shout "Alice, who the fuck is Alice?" When Peters was a guest in the restaurant one evening and witnessed the ritual, he took up the idea immediately. He notified his friend Koelewijn and they both recorded a single under the name Gompie.

The song first developed into a hit in the Benelux countries . In their home country, Gompie reached number 1 in the charts for five weeks in the spring of 1995 . From there, the success spilled over into neighboring countries. In the German-speaking countries, the single achieved high placements in the top ten in the summer. In Great Britain it was enough for the top twenty.

The song Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from the Monty Python film The Life of Brian was designed on the same principle . The song was called Life? You Never Saw My Wife but did not achieve the success of Alice, Who the Fuck Is Alice? .

In the aftermath of the single success, the band released the album Who the X Is Gompie? , which mainly contained parodies of well-known songs by artists such as Gloria Gaynor , Elvis Presley , LaBelle and others, but also some humorous original compositions. The album was not a commercial success.
