Gonzalo Rodríguez Lafora
Gonzalo Rodríguez Lafora (born June 25, 1886 in Madrid , † December 27, 1971 ibid) was a Spanish-Mexican neurologist , neuropathologist and psychiatrist .
Life
Lafora studied psychiatry in Berlin, Paris and Munich. He worked as an associate professor of neuropathology and head of the Institute for Physiology of the Brain at the Institut Cajal in Madrid. In 1923 he gave popular science lectures on psychoanalysis in Buenos Aires . In 1928 he fled the Franco regime to Mexico and did not return to Spain until the end of his life.
Lafora disease is named after Lafora , a hereditary metabolic disease in which polyglycosan bodies become trapped in various tissues, including the nervous system, liver and muscle tissue. These inclusions arise due to impaired glycogen metabolism and are also known as Lafora bodies .
