Andrea Mugione (born November 9, 1940 in Caivano , Metropolitan City of Naples , Italy , † February 26, 2020 in Naples ) was an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Benevento .

Life

Andrea Mugione studied at the Seminary of Salerno and received on 28 June 1964 in the Cathedral of Aversa the priesthood . From 1968 to 1978 he worked for missionary and pastoral purposes in Venezuela . He was then spiritual of the Aversa seminary until 1982 , of which he was rector from 1986 to 1988. From 1980 to 1986 he also worked as a parish priest in Orta di Atella and Aversa.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Cassano all'Jonio on March 17, 1988 . The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America , Bernardin Gantin , ordained him episcopal on April 28 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were João Gazza SX , Bishop of Aversa , and Giuseppe Agostino , Archbishop of Crotone-Santa Severina. As a motto he chose Communio et missio .

On November 21, 1998, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Crotone-Santa Severina . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on May 3, 2006 Archbishop of Benevento. In the regional bishops' conference of Campania he was a delegate for the evangelization of peoples and the cooperation of the churches.

In 2009 he was accepted into the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master John Patrick Foley with the rank of Grand Officer .

On February 18, 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation. Mugione was admitted to the Cardarelli Hospital in Naples in February 2020, where he died that same month.
