Serafino Sprovieri

Serafino Sprovieri (born May 13, 1930 in San Pietro in Guarano , Calabria ; † January 3, 2018 in Cosenza , Calabria) was an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Benevento .

Life

Serafino Sprovieri studied philosophy and theology at the Calabrian Seminar "Pius XI" of Reggio Calabria and received on July 12 in 1953 by Aniello Calcara the priesthood . Sprovieri was rector of the Diocesan Seminary in Cosenza (Seminario Arcivescovile Cosentino; 1962–1971) and rector of the Pontifical Theological Seminary “St. Pius X ”in Catanzaro (Pontificio Seminario Teologico Regionale“ S. Pio X ”di Catanzaro; 1975–1980).

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 11, 1978 titular bishop of Themisonium and auxiliary bishop in Catanzaro . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Sebastiano Baggio on April 9 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Armando Fares , Archbishop of Catanzaro, and Aureliano Sorrentino , Archbishop of Reggio Calabria .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Rossano e Cariati on July 31, 1980 and Archbishop of Benevento on November 25, 1991.

On May 3, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. He then worked as a pastor in the Diocese of Cosenza, including as chaplain of the Eucharistic Center “Madonna del Carmine”.

He also worked as a journalist and author. He founded several Catholic magazines and re-founded the Catholic weekly newspaper of the Diocese of Cosenza Parola di Vita , first published in 1925 , which he himself directed from 1956 to 1966.

He has been honored several times for his work, including an honorary citizen of Cosenza in 2013.
