Google Hotpot was an online rating portal from Google Inc. that was launched in the USA in November 2010 and has also been used in other countries since February 2011. Hotpot was integrated into Google Places , the database came from Google Maps .

history

Google Hotpot was released as a beta version on November 16, 2010 . The service supplemented or expanded Google Places, which had previously aggregated the ratings of third portals such as Yelp or Qype . They were then mixed with the hotpot data, with the latter being preferred.

Experts rated Google Hotpot as an important step by Google to gain a stronger foothold in the area of location-based services . Just two months after the launch, Marissa Mayer announced at the Digital Life Design in Munich that the service would soon be available outside the USA. The announcement was implemented on February 2, 2011 in German-speaking countries.

In April 2011, Google announced that it would no longer continue Hotpot as an independent service. The functions of the offer have been fully integrated into Google Places. The success of the service was given as the reason for the hiring.

Functions

When it was launched, Google Hotpot already included information on the location of 50 million shops, as well as educational and leisure facilities such as museums . The service offers the option of entering a rating in the form of stars and a comment for each of these so-called locations . It is also possible to save ten favorites that are judged to be unbeatable .

A Google account is required to actively use Hotpot . When searching for facilities in the vicinity, an algorithm uses the hotpot data of friends, so that, according to the developers, better recommendations appear. Google Hotpot supports 38 languages and can be used in the web browser as well as in the iOS and Android programs of Google Maps.
